Facebook bans like-gating – Try these 5 Facebook like-gate alternatives instead

Have you heard the news? As of November 5, 2014, Facebook like-gates are dead. If you blinked, you probably missed it because it was buried at the bottom of their latest list of changes to their API and SDKs. The statement went something like this:

You must not incentivize people to use social plugins or to like a Page. This includes offering rewards, or gating apps or app content based on whether or not a person has liked a Page. It remains acceptable to incentivize people to login to your app, checkin at a place or enter a promotion on your app’s Page. To ensure quality connections and help businesses reach the people who matter to them, we want people to like Pages because they want to connect and hear from the business, not because of artificial incentives. We believe this update will benefit people and advertisers alike.

Because the changes made to like-gates affects your Facebook marketing, I put together a list of Facebook like-gate alternatives to help you continue to grow your Facebook Page likes without like-gates.

What is like-gating or fan-gating?

If you use tools like Shortstack, Tabsite, or Heyo or other landing page alternatives to show different types of content to fans and non-fans on your Facebook Page, you were using a feature known as a like-gate (or a fan-gate).

Examples of like-gating

Some examples of like-gates include:

  • Liking a Facebook Page to enter a contest
  • Providing coupons or promo codes once someone likes your Facebook Page
  • Liking a Facebook Page in order to watch a video
  • Liking a Facebook Page to download a PDF or eBook

If you currently use like-gates on your Facebook Page, they will continue to work until November 5. After that date, if you still have them on your Facebook Page, people will be able to access the content without liking your page. No new landing pages will be allowed to use the like-gate feature.

Why Facebook banned like-gating

So why did Facebook ban like-gating? They explained their reasoning further down the article.

To ensure quality connections and help businesses reach the people who matter to them, we want people to like Pages because they want to connect and hear from the business, not because of artificial incentives. We believe this update will benefit people and advertisers alike.

When you think about it, like-gating on Facebook Pages has been slowly dying. They were popular back in 2010, but we have gotten a lot smarter as marketers. When Facebook launched a Facebook Page redesign earlier this year, landing page tabs were also removed and then re-added at the last minute. For me, this signaled that Facebook was putting less of an emphasis on landing pages.

Why like-gates don’t matter

While like-gates helped grow your Facebook Page likes, they really didn’t matter. This was because a lot of Facebook Pages were not growing them the right way. Previously, when you used a like-gate to have someone like your Facebook Page to enter a contest, a lot of times you were not bringing in the right types of fans on your page. In most cases, people liked your page just so they could enter a contest or win a prize. They were not interested in the content your page was going to share. By eliminating these gimmicks, this should help improve your Facebook experience in the following ways:

  • Users will see more of the content they want to see in their news feed
  • Advertisers can use Facebook Ads to improve their targeting
  • Businesses can improve the focus of their Facebook Pages

Now that you know about changes to like-gates and how they will affect your Facebook marketing tactics, I wanted to share a list of Facebook like-gate alternatives to help you bring in more quality Facebook Page likes.

Facebook video ads coming to a news feed near you

Since September, Facebook has been testing an easier way to watch videos. After months of testing and seeing higher levels of engagement in people liking, commenting, and watching videos, they announced a premium ad called Facebook video ads.

What are Facebook video ads?

Facebook video ads
Example of Facebook video ads in the news feed.

Facebook video ads are a way for advertisers to display video content in a users’ news feed.

When a user is viewing their news feed and a video ad appears, the video will begin to autoplay without sound.

Before you get mad and delete your Facebook account, don’t worry. They’re not that bad.

That’s because in order to play a video with sound, users will need to click on the video to play it with sound.

What they’re not

I am surprised at how many people are already complaining about Facebook video ads. They’re not live, so you really have nothing to compare them to yet.

For those of you trying to figure out what they look like, forget about seeing a Facebook news feed with lots of videos playing at one time.

Facebook knows what they are doing. Video ads will autoplay (without sound).

One additional thing if you want to watch the video ad with sound, users will need to click the ad. If you want to skip the video ad, you can scroll right past them.

Why you don’t need to worry about Facebook video ads

While Facebook is currently testing video ads with select partners like Summit Entertainment, most users won’t need to worry about seeing an abundance of video ads in their news feed.

As I mentioned, they’re a premium feature and because they will cost $2 million per 15 second spot (source), you’ll mostly only see video ads from companies with deep pockets, which means the ads should be pretty good.

This doesn’t mean you should avoid Facebook video ads. They are coming to a news feed near you at some point so get ready.

How to change Facebook Ads currency for accounts you manage

Do you need to change Facebook Ads currency for your Facebook Ads? It’s not exactly where you expect it to be.

The Problem with changing currencies

For those of you who run Facebook Ads for your own business or for someone else, there may come a time when you need to change the currency. This way you’re not losing money because of exchange rates.

Instead of looking in Facebook Ads Manager, you need to look somewhere else, because Facebook doesn’t let you change your currency there.

It’s somewhat understandable why they didn’t put it in Facebook Ads Manager in the first place.

Chances are you login to your own Facebook Profile to create Facebook Ads. By having it in your profile instead of in your Facebook Ads account, you can quickly switch your Facebook Ads currency in one place for all of the ads accounts you work with.

To change Facebook Ads currency, follow these instructions.

Remember, if you are managing Facebook Ads for other pages, be sure you are managing Facebook Ads the right way. This way they are being billed for their ads instead of you. You can also easily change currencies depending on the ads account you are working with.

How to boost a Facebook post (and get better results) without the Facebook boost post button

Are you missing the boost post button on your Facebook Page posts? This is the button that appears to the right of the number of people who saw your Facebook post.

Example of a Facebook Page post with the boost post button.

While this is a quick and easy way to advertise a specific Facebook Page post to more people, most users think that they absolutely need it. Guess what, you really don’t.

It also works in your favor that you don;t have the boost post button on your page posts.

So why I am so against using the boost post button on your Facebook Page posts?

Why you don’t need the Facebook boost post button

The boost post button is a cheap thrill to get your posts seen by more people.

While in theory this sounds great and if you use it, more people will see your posts, what boost post doesn’t do is get it in front of the right people.

Here’s a great example from Dennis Yu using the boost post button.

Facebook boost post example
Example of the Facebook boost post button

As you can see in this example, a lot of the comments that were received don’t relate to the product. So yes, the boost post button did its job – it took your money and showed it to more people.

What it didn’t do was show it to the right people.

So how do you fix the boost post button? My recommendation is to use Facebook Ads to boost your post instead of the Facebook boost post button.

This way you can get target who see’s your posts and where they see it.

For example, the normal boost post button let’s you target basic demographic information.

When you don’t use the boost post button, you actually get better targeting, which you’ll see below.
